Fundraisers Ahead

By John Swartz

Two fundraisers are happening which occur every year at this time. This year however, is quite different, not just for the ones in question, but for every group who has to raise funds to operate in the community.

The Kiwanis Club of Orillia’s auction, normally held at ODAS Park, is doing something different in that they are doing what many others have done for their fundraisers, they’re taking it online. It’s also taking more time. Instead of running all out on Saturday, you will be able to bid on items until next Thursday, November 12 at 8 p.m.

There is a long list of items donated by area businesses and organizations. Gift cards from restaurants like The Common Stove, Brewery Bay Food Company, Rustica, Pita Pit, East Side Mario’s and many others are on block.

The Orillia Fire Department has free home inspection, with a smoke alarm test. Wait… they do that, for free anyway. It appears they are offering a Celebration Drive By, which seems like it would be the perfect thing if you have kids fascinated by fire trucks. Let’s just hope the task doesn’t get assigned to the midnight shift.

There are many items from the arts community, music by the bands 112 Records has on their label, music by any band in stock at Alleycats Music, books, oh do they have books, donated by the Canadian Authors Association – several lots of books) and things to hang on a wall. There are services you can have done to your car, home improvements services, and personal services, which you can top off with flowers from Evans Flowers.

To register to bid on any of the 550 items go here.

Poppy Time

The Royal Canadian Legion raises funds to support their services to veterans by selling poppies. You won’t see legion members selling poppies outside of businesses this year, but you will find donation boxes in many stores, including the LCBO.

Money raise by the legion for poppy sales goes to paying for veteran’s services like medical devices and other support programs.

Patricia Beecham has greeting cards showing a poppy she painted on sale at several locations. The cards are $5 each and $2 will be donated to the legion’s Poppy Fund.

You can get them at Shadowbox, Hibernation Arts, Peter Street Fine Arts, Tiffin’s Creative Centre, Stuffed and the UPS Store.
