Winter Games Countdown Clock Starts

By John Swartz

The organizing committee of the Orillia 2020 Ontario Winter Games revved up the hype machine Tuesday with their 100 Days Out event. Organizing chair Jed Levene welcomed dignitaries, those wishing to become volunteers, and announced Hydro One has signed on as the lead sponsor.

Jason Fitzsimmons, chief corporate affairs and customer care officer for Hydro One, told the audience he, and Hydro One look for opportunities to support youth, and the winter games and the fact they are investing in Orillia is a great fit.

There will be 27 events, including the typical winter sports (hockey, skiing, curling, snowboarding and speed skating) and some indoor sports (karate, badminton, kick boxing, swimming, squash and wrestling) taking place in Orillia, Rama, Oro-Medonte and Barrie. Approximately 3000 athletes will be competing.

People lined up to be the first of 800 volunteers the games will need to operate from February 27 through March 1. They also had a chance to get first crack at sweat shirts, hats and t-shirts, and eat some of the celebration cake.

You can find out more and sign up to volunteer at the games website.
