It seems to me a higher percentage of Native people turn to artistic expression whether it be through music, visual expression, or writing and I think it would be good for the rest of us to pay more attention to the stories they are telling.

Hearing the music of those two giants of 20th century music in one program played by only three musicians using their creative chops to render the music in a satisfactory way (Basie and Ellington worked primarily with big bands) illustrates how great music can transcend generations of both the musicians and the listeners.

Two pieces in particular are by Howard Cable. Right off the top is his arrangement of O Canada, which the band, in its Orillia Wind Ensemble years, played soon after it was written. The band will also do Hockey Night In Canada, which was also fresh off the printer back in 2002 At that earlier concert both were conducted by Cable.

May 1 will be the second anniversary of Gordon Lightfoot’s passing. Like last year, there will be a remembrance celebration at Tudhope Park out on Barnfield Point where his statue is. Bring a lawn chair.
