Make Your Junk Someone Else’s Treasure

It’s garage sale season and the City of Orillia is promoting a city-wide Garage Sale Day June 15.
Whether it rains or shines, it is hoped it can be a fundraiser for affordable housing. People are encouraged to clean house and donate a portion of their proceeds to the City’s Affordable Housing Reserve fund. There is no need to register your garage sale to participate. You can make a donation online.
Residents and organizations who would like to participate in Garage Sale Day are encouraged to advertise their information through social media and community platforms using the hashtag #OrilliaGarageSaleDay. A Facebook event page has also been created for residents and organizations to post their garage sale information for Garage Sale Day.
The City suggests you:
- Advertise your sale through social media, and community platforms.
- Price items competitively to attract buyers.
- Organize items neatly and clearly label prices.
- Provide adequate signs to direct visitors to your sale location, but make sure to follow City of Orillia signage regulations. Signs must be removed within 24 hours following the garage sale, and signs can’t be attached or supported by a utility pole, tree, garbage can, planter. They cannot be located within 10m (30 ft.) of an intersection and can’t impede pedestrian traffic.
Coinciding this month is the annual Treasure Hunt. This is a monthly program during warm weather to encourage the recycling or re-use of large household items. The monthly date people can leave items at the curb for others to take are:
- June 15-16
- July 20-21
- August 17-18
- September 21-22
- October 19-20
You can leave items at the curb after 5 p.m. on the Friday of the event weekend, but must remove all uncollected items by Sunday at 11 p.m. (Mondays for long weekends).
Residents who fail to remove uncollected treasures from the curb will be subject to fines pursuant to Chapter 877 of the City of Orillia Municipal Code – Solid Waste Management.
People can also visit the Waste Diversion Site where there are different types of items in the City’s Reuse Depot to take free of charge. Items include household items, such as pictures, furniture, and books; paints, stains, and paint thinners; car care products, such as waxes and polishes, and home and garden products.
