Tree Planting Season
By Sarah Walters – Special to SUNonline/Orillia
Area residents who want to plant a tree or native shrub on their properties are invited to Sustainable Orillia’s third annual tree giveaway on September 26, 2026.
Orillia area residents can pick up free native trees and shrubs (one per household) at Sustainable Orillia’s community tree giveaway on September 26, 2026 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Tudhope Park in the parking lot past the curling rink.
Trees will be available for pre-order while supplies last. An additional tree can be ordered with a $10 donation to the event. Area residents are invited to complete the registration form in advance to reserve tree(s), which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Order your tree here before September 15.
Only native plants will be available. They are adapted to local growing conditions and provide important habitat and food for local birds, insects and other wildlife. Most agree planting a diversity of trees and shrubs makes our community more resilient.
The trees and shrubs available on September 26 include: Bur Oak, Red Osier Dogwood, Silver Maple, Black Cherry, Tamarack, White Spruce, Tulip Tree, Swamp Rose, Chokecherry, Fragrant Sumac and White Birch.
Sustainable Orillia is grateful to Stone Row Farms for providing the trees, and to Horizon Tree Company for their generous sponsorship of this event and for providing tree-related advice at the pickup location.
The giveaway is being held in connection with National Tree Day in Canada.
