Happy New Year, Kid Style

By John Swartz

The City of Orillia hosted a New Year’s Eve party at the Orillia Recreation Centre on Sunday.

At 10 minutes before the 5 p.m. published start time, the rec center could be called busy, busier than normal with a much higher degree of short people running about. The rec enter really doesn’t close before events and there is no grand opening of the doors. Staff were getting the last bits of preparation together.

However, as it turns out Orillians are clock watchers because at 5 p.m. the main corridor of the rec center looked like Union Station at rush hour, with people moving quickly to catch their trains. There was a steady, wall to wall wave of people filing through

Before 5, cannon practice could have happened in the gym. At 5:03 it was full of kids.  One of the funniest things was to see kids turn themselves inside out upon their first gaze of the inflatables in the gym through the floor to ceiling glass panels in the main corridor (above the action).

Staff served popcorn and cotton candy. If you think the line for popcorn was longest, you’d be wrong.

Here is a gallery of some of the action.
