Sustainable Orillia Month

By Fred Larsen – Special to SUNonline/Orillia

September 2022 marks our 4th annual Sustainable Orillia Month, and this year’s event promises to be more relevant and exciting than ever. Check out our website, or follow us on Facebook and Instagram over the next few days for more details. Meanwhile, here is a preview of what’s planned.

4th Annual Electric Vehicle Event (September 17th and 18th)

Back for the 4th year running and bigger than ever, this showcase is your opportunity to kick some tires while learning more about electric vehicles – both cars and bikes. It’s a two-day event with displays from local dealers, test drives, and experts and owners on-site to answer all your questions. The transition to EV’s is gaining momentum; it’s critical to reducing carbon emissions and protecting our future well-being. It’s also part of the Big Move – Transportation identified in Orillia’s climate action plan. So mark your calendars to come on out to ODAS Park on Saturday the 17th or Sunday the 18th  to learn more about how electric vehicles will put us all on the path to net zero.

Path to Net Zero Conference (September 25th, St. Paul’s Centre)

Sustainable Orillia is proud to invite you to meet and speak with like-minded people and a number of our elected officials, including many currently running for municipal office later this fall. It’s a community conference and workshop that will feature the uplifting film 2040. The conference will provide a forum for understanding and discussion of the community climate change action plan  – Orillia’s Climate Future, including what we can do to achieve Net Zero right here in our community.  Come prepared to participate. It will be an up-close and first-hand opportunity for every Orillian to influence the decision-making and change we need to ensure a sustainable future for ourselves, our children and generations to come.

The event kicks off with a keynote speaker at 1p.m. Admission is free and registration information will be available right after Labour Day.

We are looking forward to introducing several more activities during Sustainable Orillia Month.  As our movement grows and as our cause becomes more critical in the face of the looming climate crisis, we hope you will participate in these events as active supporters and volunteers. Sustainability is a meaningful cause and you can make a difference.
