Leacock Medal Long List Announced

By John Swartz

The annual long list of nominees for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour was announced today. The list is developed by a Canada-wide reading panel. Those in contention for the 72nd award are:

Ali Bryan for The Figgs

Mark Critch for Son of a Critch: A Childish Newfoundland Memoir

Aminder Dhaliwal for Woman World

Hadley Dyer for Here So Far Away

Uzma Jalauddin for Ayesha At Last

Cathal Kelly for Boy Wonders

Rick Mercer for Final Report

Martin Myers for The NeverMind of Brian Hildebrand

Eden Robinson for Trickster Drift

Lindsay Wong for The Woo-Woo: How I Survived Ice Hockey, Drug Raids, Demons, and My Crazy Chinese Family

The award will be made June 8 at the annual Leacock Dinner held this year at the Mariposa Inn. Tickets ($75) are on sale now at the Leacock Museum, 705-329-1908. You can reserve tickets at jmartynyshyn@orillia.ca The host for the dinner, back by popular demand, is former medal winner Ian Ferguson. Last year Dan Needles announced his forced retirement from the post of Mayor of Mariposa (he forced himself) and the Leacock Associates, who manage the medal contest, were informed the new mayor is Drew Hayden Taylor – but only if he could call himself Grand Chief of Mariposa. Everyone thought that was a good idea, mainly because no one else wanted to be mayor.

The Meet the Authors event is June 7 at 7 p.m. at the Mariposa Inn. Tickets are $20 and are available by the same method as above.
