Sustainable Orillia Bike Challenge Breaks Records

The 2026 Sustainable Orillia Bike Challenge wrapped up another successful season with record participation levels, impressive cycling achievements and strong community support, highlighting the growing popularity of active transportation in Orillia.
Running from May 11 to July 12, 2026, the annual challenge encourages residents to set personal cycling goals and work steadily toward them throughout the nine-week event. Participants were able to register as individuals or family groups, with each day they spent riding contributing toward their personal and family totals.
This year, 137 people registered for the challenge, including 30 family teams, which is twice the number of families that participated in 2025. This growth demonstrates increasing community interest in embracing healthy, environmentally-friendly transportation and recreation.
By the conclusion of the challenge, participants had collectively logged an impressive 1,051 riding days. Family teams contributed 329 of those riding days, highlighting the strong family participation that has become a hallmark of the event. Submitted ride logs captured a combined total of 15,867.57 kilometres travelled, with the actual distance likely higher since maintaining a record was not a requirement.
The results represent substantial growth from last year, when participants logged 809 riding days and reported 6,264 kilometres travelled. This year’s total riding days increased by 242 days, representing nearly a 30 per cent increase. Reported kilometres travelled increased by more than 9,600 kilometres, an increase of more than 150 per cent compared with 2025, demonstrating the continued growth of the challenge and the commitment of participants to getting on their bikes.
Participants were recognized for their dedication through a crest program based on the number of days ridden during the challenge. Riders who cycled between 10 and 20 days earned a Bronze Crest, while those riding 21 to 40 days received a Silver Crest. Participants who achieved between 41 and 56 riding days were awarded the prestigious Gold Crest.This year’s challenge recognized 36 participants, representing a 24 per cent increase in riders reaching crest milestones.
The challenge concluded with a closing ceremony July 18 at the Bike Stop of Orillia, where participants gathered to celebrate their accomplishments and receive their earned crests.
Organizers praised all participants for their commitment and enthusiasm throughout the challenge. This year’s results, including more riding days, more kilometres travelled, and more crest recipients than ever before, demonstrate growing interest in cycling and active transportation within the community.
Special recognition was also given to the challenge’s top-performing family teams. The Bloemendals, McMullins, and Conboys finished as the top three family groups and were awarded restaurant gift cards in recognition of their outstanding efforts. The gift cards were generously donated by local businesses Theo’s Eatery, Shine, Rustica, Mr. Seto, and Brewery Bay Food Company.
With participation continuing to grow and riders collectively covering thousands of kilometres, the Sustainable Orillia Bike Challenge remains an important community initiative promoting wellness, environmental stewardship, and a shared passion for cycling. Sustainable Orillia looks ahead to next year’s challenge, organizers say the record-breaking results from 2026 are an encouraging sign that more residents are choosing to cycle, stay active, and contribute to a healthier and more sustainable community.
