Fixed That In Time

Orillia council held a special meeting Friday. Notice was not sent in advance and the knowledge of the meeting was gained only ten minutes before it started at 10 a.m. The purpose was to amend a May 6 motion relating to closing streets downtown on Saturday evenings this summer.

It lasted all of 4 minutes and 47 seconds.

When council adopted the motion close streets this summer, it seemed odd to SUNonline/Orillia the final date of August 24 meant the opportunity Labour Day weekend was not included. It was known at the time the DOMB was going to participate in the Port of Orillia Pirate Party on Labour Day Weekend.

The amending motion also includes a block of Mississaga Street which was left out of the original motion. Parking lot 5 (across from Brewery Bay Food company) was also added.

Councillor Dave Campbell said a couple streets (blocks) were omitted in the original motion. Because the City has already issued patio permits to some businesses in the omitted blocks, Campbell said the issue could not wait until the next council meeting July 15.

So, every Saturday from June 29 to Labour Day weekend Mississaga Street will be closed from Peter Street to Front, and from Andrew Street to West, and Peter Street will be closed from Mississaga to Colborne Streets from 5 to 11 p.m.
